How to Take Care of Yourself to Prevent Burnout

09 August 2022

Have you ever experienced burnout or are currently going through a period of burnout without realising it is happening to you?  What is burnout? What burnout is, is a mental state of physical and emotional exhaustion combined with feelings of cynicism and ineffectiveness. Burnout can lead to depression, anxiety, or other mental health issues. The long-term effects of burnout can be worked through and reversed if handled properly and can also be prevented by having a good day to day selfcare routine in place.

The recent years particularly during the Covid pandemic have seen an increased number of people experiencing burnout. Burnout can lead to missed goals, loss of revenue, and poor mental and physical health. Due to all the bad results created from burnout, taking the time to avoid it is vital to your life and overall happiness.

Here are four ways to prevent burnout.

Identify Your Triggers to Burnout

Your trigger may be personal problems, lack of sleep, deadlines, or even a toxic work environment. The triggers for burnout are different for everyone. Some people may feel overworked or not challenged enough, while others may feel they are not doing good enough in their work.

Identifying your triggers can help you address them before it’s too late. In addition, being mindful of your triggers can prevent additional problems. For example, some common triggers include a busy work schedule, a stressful work environment, a lack of sleep or too much sleep, unhealthy eating habits, or a lack of proper food intake.

Once you have identified what your triggers are, try to avoid them as much as possible to prevent yourself from getting burned out.

Keep and Follow a Proper Schedule

A well-planned schedule is a terrific way to prevent burnout. They help you be more productive and organised. The most important thing to remember when following a schedule is that it should fit your needs. Some people prefer to work in the morning, while others like working in the afternoon. Everything depends on what works best for you and your lifestyle. My favourite tool to use for myself is the GrowthDay app. GrowthDay app has a multitude of features that help you to manage yourself and your day more effectively and reduce your stress levels without hindering one’s personal output. See the link at the bottom of this article to learn more about the GrowthDay app if you are interested.

Make Self-Care a Priority

Stress is the leading factor to burnout, so self-care is so important. Unfortunately, it is common to avoid proper self-care, especially in modern western society. The culture makes you feel guilty for prioritising self-care over work. However, adequate self-care is vital to being highly productive, both now and in the future. Therefore, ignoring self-care is ignoring your work too.

Conduct Monthly Self-Assessments

Self-assessments are an excellent way to prevent burnout because they help identify what is stressing you out and causing you to overwork. You can then work on what you need to do to avoid the stressors and improve your life altogether. I really promote GrowthDay app for this, as the GrowthDay app also focusses on helping you to identify what is stressing you out.
