Committing Yourself to Your Top 5 Priorities

16 August 2022

If you think about the word commitment, what comes up for you? Does it sound like a chore or a burden, or perhaps something that you have to do instead of wanting to do? Well committing yourself to your top 5 priorities of your weekly life month-by-month is different to that of a regular to-do list of jobs.

When you commit yourself to your life’s weekly top priorities each month which are your top personal goals, guess what? You gain all the benefits and reap all the rewards. Committing yourself to positive action towards your life’s top goals each day of each week means committing to your ‘authentic self’.

Although commitment may sound like a bad word, when it comes to committing yourself to moving towards your goals that are at the top of your list and are your top priorities each and every single day, there are a few steps you can take to make it easier. These steps are as follows.

Start Small

If you are like most individuals, you may have set grand goals and desires only to fall flat and feel as though you have failed. More often than not setting goals that are too big to start with is one sure-fire way to flop. You feel as though the goal should have been a daily priority to work towards and an enjoyable ride along the way despite the hard work you would have incurred, just ended up being a task and not enjoyable at all. Poor planning is ultimately the cause of this.

When you have a desire, a dream, or a vision, it is important to set smaller goals and therefore small priorities to manage each day to start with, ones that are more manageable. When your goals are more manageable, priorities that need to be set up alongside this are quite simply easier to achieve. As you grow as a person then you naturally increase that which you wish to achieve and hence the priorities will grow in size in accordance with this.

Once you have achieved one small goal, the feeling of confidence in you will soar and you will be able to achieve the next bigger goal and therefore that next set of daily priorities that come with that larger goal.

Have an Accountability Partner

Once you have chosen and set smaller goals and you create a list of priorities that come with it, find yourself a buddy, co-worker, or family member who will sign up to be your accountability partner. Make sure that person is in support of what you are doing as well. So, when you set that goal, you will now have someone to answer to so to speak if you are not meeting your list of daily priorities that need to be completed in order to achieve that particular goal or vision.

In other words, make a promise and have someone check in on you to see if you are keeping that promise and that you are measuring up against that daily list of priorities you set yourself in order to achieve the goal. It might be to attend a weekly online class relating to gaining knowledge to increase the growth of your goal or it might be to make a phone call on a daily basis to gain new clients. Whatever it is, have someone to answer to and you will see how this has a positive impact on your end goal and results.

Reward Yourself

Whenever you set yourself a list of daily priorities in order to reach a goal no matter how big or small, reward yourself on a regular basis for having followed your daily to-do list. Whatever the goal was whether it was to find one new client a month or to learn a new set of skills that month, when you reach your goal reward yourself. Pat yourself on the back before continuing to the next goal or the next big step.

If you start out small, have someone you are accountable to when you make a promise to yourself, and reward yourself whenever you reach a goal or have completed that which you set out to do no matter how big or small. You will see how easy it is to commit yourself to positive actions and a regular routine when working on your set of priorities that brings you achievement and satisfaction.

Priorities Set You Up for Success

By setting up a list of your weekly top 5 priorities at the start of every week and a list of monthly goal-based priorities at the start of each fresh month, you will see your achievements grow one by one. Even if you don’t complete your prioritised list fully by the end of the month, make a fresh list for the oncoming month and add those outstanding uncompleted ones to the top of the next list. This will ensure you maintain a level of momentum and achievement that would otherwise have evaded you had you not done so.
