Do you like the idea of self-care or giving love and thanks, but you keep forgetting to squeeze any personal time into your busy schedule? Self-Care Sundays may help you to stay on track by devoting one day a week to your wellbeing by sending others a gift of thanks or love. Doing a daily self-care routine is even more effective, but if you are just getting started then a weekly routine of self-care that includes giving thanks or a gift of love to another is a great place to begin.
While you could pick any day of the week to start practicing working on yourself internally at an emotional level, Sunday has its advantages. You’re probably home from work, so you have more control over your time. It also gives you a chance to prepare for a fresh start each week.
Remember that many of the most nurturing activities are simple, fun, and free. Use this following method I was taught myself by Brendon Burchard (High Performance coach and business mentor of GrowthDay) to invent your own Self-Care Sunday rituals and bring to the surface the very things you want to say to others you care about in your life and enrich your life.
The following method of journaling called ‘Loving Force’ journaling is to help you to develop a sense of love and thankfulness for people in your life. It was developed by Brendon Burchard from the Growth Day platform online. As Brendon likes to say to us - “Live, Love, Matter”.
1. Start by having a journal to journal in on a Sunday.
2. Think about the 3 – 5 most important people in your life and write each person's name down.
3. For each person you listed in number 2 above, write three simple things about each person as follows: (a) Why do you love them? (b) What do you think that they need right now in their life? (c) What are they dreaming of? (or becoming?).
4. Then for each person you listed in number 2 above, write down the following: (a) What do you wish for them? (example: a wish for their health / happiness, some direction, they become determined to stand up for themselves).
5. After doing this, send each person a personal audio text on your phone. Let them know you love them or tell them what you wish for them in this life. Say “Hey, I was just journaling about you today and I wanted to say to you….” or “Hey, I was journaling about you today and wanted to say I love you. You mean a lot to me because…”.
This can have profound consequences in your life because in doing this little action as a practice each week on a Sunday you are releasing the feel-good hormone called Dopamine from your brain as well as giving someone else something to feel good about in their lives each week.
The practice of self-care and reflection is a vital building block to becoming a better person as well as having a deeper level of gratitude, thankfulness and love in life. Let Self-Reflection Sundays become a reminder to tend to your loving thoughts of others on a regular basis. You’ll increase your chances for leading a deeper and more meaningful life and increase your capacity of love for others in the life you lead.
